KATHMANDU: Sep 5, National Human Right Commission drawing its serious attention against government’s decision to ban unregistered social media has asked to rethink its decision so as to protect the rights of expression, right to communicate and other fundamental rights as enshrined in the constitution and international laws.
The constitutional body, said that banning social media outright would not only affect millions of users but also undermine the spirit of democratic governance and the fundamental values of human rights.

It emphasized that it is the government’s responsibility to legally register, list and regulate service providers. However, it noted that closing platforms that have long been in operation and have become an integral part of communication and expression for Nepalis would have a direct impact on ordinary citizens.
Calling social media an inseparable part of people’s lives, the NHRC asked government to adopt alternative measures for regulation and management.
