KATHMANDU, July 21: Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has extended the deadline for registering complaints related to human rights violation during the armed conflict until August 10.

"We have decided to receive the complaints from victims until August 10, exactly six months before the TRC's tenure comes to an end," said TRC Chairman Surya Kiran Gurung.

The TRC has a tenure of two years, which could be extended by a year.

The TRC had received complaints from victims over a period of three months at its central office and through local peace committees in the districts.

"As the tenure of secretaries at local peace committees have expired, we have decided to register the complaints directly at the TRC office in Kathmandu. Victims however can send their complaints through other communicative means such as by post or email," said Gurung.

The TRC has received 53,016 complaints so far.

When asked about the challenges of investigating the large number of complaints, Chairman Gurung expressed confidence that the task could be accomplished with support from concerned authorities, individuals and groups.

"We want the ambiguities and contradictions within the CIEDP and the TRC Acts to be amended in line with Supreme Court verdicts. We want adequate budget so that we can hire experts to carry out investigation. We need support from all concerned authorities, agencies and individuals," Gurung told Republica.

Earlier, the CIEDP had also extended the deadline to register complaints until August 10.
